Make Easy Cracker Candy for the Holidays
I first discovered a version of this candy recipe floating around online a few years ago. It uses ingredients most people already have in their pantries and refrigerators, and it has an ingredient many people would not expect in candy: Saltine crackers. It may sound weird, but it really tastes delicious, and it’s easy to put together. Beware: once you try this candy, you’ll have a hard time stopping after just one piece.
I like to make this treat when we have company coming over during the holidays, but it’s good to eat any time of year. Some people like to package this candy up in pretty tins or containers and give it away as Christmas gifts as well. It’s a good gift if you’re on a budget and don’t have a lot of money to spend, but it tastes so indulgent no one will think about how inexpensive it is.
Cracker Candy
Ingredients:
1 sleeve of Saltine crackers
1 stick of salted butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
On a rimmed baking sheet or casserole pan, arrange Saltine crackers in a single layer. In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar until a thick liquid forms. Pour the butter and brown sugar mixture over the Saltine crackers. Bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes or until the mixture gets bubbly.
Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly on top. Allow this to sit for several minutes until the chocolate chips have mostly melted. Gently spread the chocolate over the crackers with a spatula until it is evenly covered.
Place the pan in the freezer until the chocolate hardens; this will take about an hour. Then, remove from the freezer and break the candy into chunks and small pieces. Store in the fridge or freezer until ready to serve.
