How to Make Campfire Banana Boats
My family goes camping several times every summer, and while s’mores are probably our favorite campfire treat, these Campfire Banana Boats are a close second. If you spent any time in scouting, you might be familiar with these outdoor desserts. They have the added benefit of being healthier than s’mores, too. They make a good, light dessert after a day spent in the great outdoors.
Campfire Banana Boats are a versatile dessert, as well. The fillings you can put in Banana Boats are only limited by your imagination. You can try Hershey’s chocolate bars or any type of candy bar broken or cut into smaller pieces. You can use only marshmallows and no chocolate, or you can use all chocolate and no marshmallows. Have fun experimenting.
Campfire Banana Boats
Ingredients:
Ripe Bananas
Chocolate Chips
Mini Marshmallows
Mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Other supplies needed: heavy duty aluminum foil, knife (plastic or metal), spoons, paper plates, metal tongs
Directions:
First, get a good campfire going and let it burn down until you get some good hot coals.
Then, cut a slit lengthwise in each banana, slicing through the peel and about halfway into the banana itself. Do not slice all the way through. Your goal here is to make a pocket inside the banana to hold all your goodies.
Stuff chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and a few mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups inside each banana. You won’t be able to fit a lot, but cram in as much as you can.
Securely wrap each Banana Boat individually in foil. Place in campfire coals. Cook for about 5 minutes before checking for doneness. To see if banana boats are finished cooking, carefully pull them from the coals using tongs, and then carefully partially unwrap the foil (it will be hot). If the marshmallows and chocolate are mostly melted, the banana boats are done. If the marshmallows and chocolate aren’t melted, wrap the Banana Boats back up and stick them back in the coals for a few more minutes.
To eat, place a Banana Boat on a paper plate, unwrap the foil, and use a spoon to eat the banana and filling directly out of the peel.
Enjoy, and happy camping!
